Lesson #25 From the Budoshoshinshu COMPANIONS IN PLAY ARE UNNECESSARY It is essential for a warrior who is serving as a retainer to have been familiar, both in private and in public, and intimate daily with those among his many comrades who are brave, love duty and honor, have wisdom and wit, and are well-spoken. Such warriors are rather few among one’s many colleagues in the clan, but even one or two of such men are more than a match for any number of the rest of one’s friends. Such men are reliable in any situation. Generally speaking, warriors do not choose their friends, and the way they will join up with anybody, frequently meeting over food and drink, is not a good thing. The reason for this is that for intimacy in the relationship of warriors, there should be cordiality and a mutual ascertaining of each other’s dispositions over a period of many days. But meeting temporarily and in a too free and easy manner, saying things like “Hey, that’s interesting!” or “What a pal!” is not the manner in which one warrior deals with another. Being extremely discourteous and unmannerly, falling all over each other throughout the night singing ballads and songs from puppet plays is not the correct way to behave. Often just when men think it fine to call each other “buddy” and “chum” there is violence over some small matter, the relationship is ruptured, and there is no one there to set it right. In the end, neither man is of the clear disposition to renew the friendship. Although the outer appearances of such men may be those of warriors, their minds would seem to be the same as those of laborers and coolies. One should have a sense of shame and prudence. These words are for the understanding of those intending to be warriors.
