“Conflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair” by Sarah Schulman @schulmanny # This book was incredible. My friend @melissvargas invited me to see Schulman do a talk when her book came out at @skylightbooks and I was fascinated by the complex yet important topics that were being discussed. I struggled greatly with figuring out which excerpts to include in this post because I put tabs in so many places, and because many of these topics and the way that they are discussed are so complicated, that I didn't want things to be taken out of context. # "Conflict Is Not Abuse" addresses some imperative subjects that need to be a point of consideration and learning within social justice spaces. I found myself challenged, disagreeing at times, but ultimately feeling more enlightened for having exposed myself to these concepts, that often go minimally challenged in activist spaces. Living in a gray area, in a society that pushes everyone to see things as binary, is difficult. # But it's an essential part of the work of creating social change, liberation work, and in conflict transformation. I wouldn't recommend this book as a starting place for people that don't have much of an understanding of privilege, systemic oppression, and power dynamics. But for those who do, I believe that it will offer some valuable insights, even for the seasoned activist. I can say that my friend @dahliaseed, who is a badass activist and organizer that I admire greatly, felt like their mind was blown as well.  Plus, bell hooks wrote a blurb on the back. What more can one ask for? :) # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads #mcgreads
