Enjoying the free delights of the paternoster elevator at Prague City Hall. These door-less, continuously moving lifts are the 1860s invention of Peter Ellis, an architect from Liverpool, and were once popular all over Eastern Europe and Germany before production ended in the 1970s over safety concerns. (They’re not exactly accessible to persons with disabilities, either.) The elevators move in a loop, so if you stay on the same up car long enough you’ll eventually go back down, or vice versa. The movement is said to resemble the way a pious person counts rosary beads, hence the name, which means “our father.” There are some 44 of these around Prague but this is the best maintained, designed by John Prokopec. Ranks up with my fave amusement park rides of this trip ?! Use with caution, of course. Via @alphajada.
