Thank you for being the person who showed me how to tie my shoes, how to row a boat, how to find clams in the bay with my toes, how to walk patiently, how to find the best shells and then sell them to make my own money, how to make the most gigantic bologna sandwiches, how to keel on a 30’ Morgan, to appreciate trail mix even though I wasn’t that into walnuts or raisins, that buying a house is important (even though I still haven’t done it yet, I promise you someday I will- just for you), how to be the poor man’s Gene Hackman or rather how Gene Hackman is the poor man’s Poppa, how to camp out overnight on a boat, how to be with someone forever & still tease each other like a third grade crush, how to love life & live every single day seeking the maximum amount of adventure, how to never act your age physically (on land and while kayak surfing at 88 years old) - a feat of courage & coordination that I would be too scared to ever attempt - but you taught me you only live once... so who knows what the future might bring? ...and how to love everyone & to be loved by everyone with zero drama. You gave Nanny a run for her money- you were the only one who could keep her & keep up with her one liners. Your daughters idolized you. And all of us grandchildren would follow you everywhere like you were the Pied Piper. What a life you had. What an incredible example of how to be the best human. I feel so lucky you were my Poppa. I would send you this note directly but, as Nanny said the other day, we don’t have your new address. I love you forever, Poppa.
