Entering the game with 47 home runs each, McGwire and Sosa put on a show for the fans at Wrigley Field in one of the most exciting contests of the season. Sosa would strike first with a two-run homer to put the Cubs up 6-2 after 5 innings, but the Cardinals would storm back to tie the game in the 8th on Big Mac’s 430-foot solo blast off reliever Matt Karchner. In his next at-bat in the 10th, McGwire would regain the home run lead by hitting the game winner just over the centerfield wall off Terry Mulholland as the Cardinals won 8-6.
It marked the 15th time that both Mark and Sammy homered on the same day of the season, but was the second (and final) occurrence in which both hit a home run in the same game. #BigMacFlashback
