A short distance beyond the toe of Italy’s boot, Europe is making what may be its last-gasp bid to remain a player in the global #solar sector. Catania, Italy, was an early backer of technology harnessing the sun’s energy. But manufacturing of solar panels has fallen off in the years since, as Chinese companies have cut prices and ramped up production. Now, the Italian utility Enel is betting on an advanced, commercially untested system. Enel believes that by focusing on an esoteric technology, it can afford to make panels in Italy and avoid a price war. #Catania, known for its trove of ornate buildings fashioned from black and gray lava rock, has long served as an industrial and agricultural hub for #Sicily. More recently, it has fallen on harder times. But Enel’s Catania plant is likely to begin producing state-of-the-art #solarpanels next year. It’s embracing heterojunction technology, which involves adding a new, microscopic layer of silicon to solar cells, increasing their ability to gather sunlight and convert it into electricity. These new panels will also be “bifacial,” meaning they’ll be able to gather light not only directly from the sun but also from stray beams that bounce off the ground. @giannicipriano photographed one of them here.
