Aretha Franklin’s hook was that she was simply better than everyone else. She also had a great sense of humor — once opening a Friars Club Roast with a goosebump inducing rendition of “America The Beautiful”. A few minutes later I said, “You know it’s gonna be a great show when the fat lady sings in the beginning”. She laughed and gave me the finger simultaneously. What a star. What a legend.
