(let’s ignore my strangely defined calf muscle) and focus INSTEAD on the fact that this generation-changing movie, Crazy Rich Asians, is out today nationwide!! It’s been a strange journey as an actor, constantly being told “they went with a white guy” over and over, or that I’ve yet again been cast in another role where I DON’T get the girl. Because an Asian man couldn’t possibly be considered a romantic interest, right?? I’ve been waiting my whole life for a movie like this to come out — a mainstream, hollywood film that represents the Asian / Asian-American community, and isn’t fetishizing or alienating Asian people, it’s just a funny and touching love story. It reminds you that there are, in fact, attractive Asian men in the world, and Asian women can be deeply complex and funny, and not just be overly sexualized or nerdy. That was a rare feeling to sit in a theater and experience such a thing. I was lucky enough to see it last week, and even though Rom-Coms are not my genre of choice, I was not surprised to see there were so many hilarious moments, and great acting as well. Paired along with the experience of finally seeing someone that looked like me, and so many other Asian-Americans on the big screen, I’d say it’s really worth your time and a bit of money (even though your moviepass might not be working anymore.) Be part of a movement and go see a funny movie.
Your support of a film like this will let Hollywood know that you care about representation, and you don’t want to wait another TWENTY-FIVE YEARS for another film with Asian-American leads!
