She is both a 20th and 21st century musical and cultural icon known the world over simply by her first name: Aretha. The reigning and undisputed “Queen Of Soul” has created an amazing legacy that spans an incredible six decades. Aretha Franklin was born March 25, 1942, Memphis, Tennessee. Franklin’s mother, Barbara, was a gospel singer and pianist. Her father, C.L. Franklin, presided over the New Bethel Baptist Church of Detroit, Michigan. Her mother died when Aretha was 10. As a young teen, Franklin performed with her father on his gospel programs in major cities throughout the country and was recognized as a vocal prodigy. In 1960 she signed with Columbia Records. Columbia tried to turn Aretha into a jazzy pop singer while she was determined to draw on her background in blues and gospel music. In 1966 Franklin signed with Atlantic Records, who gave her more creative control, and she began revolutionizing soul music by creating a sound all her own. Franklin's debut Atlantic album, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, also became commercially successful, later going gold. Many saw Franklin as a symbol of black America itself, reflecting the increased confidence and pride of African-Americans in the decade of the civil rights movement and other triumphs for the black community. Just last year, Franklin was honored with "Aretha Franklin Way" in the city where she'd find her soul, through the spirit of gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church where her father was pastor. Robert Smith Jr. is the current pastor. "When this place is packed, when she walks in the whole atmosphere changes," Smith said. "There's a new spirit that comes over the place. I would call her the life blood." Smith says despite her worldwide fame, the singer never forgot her roots in the Motor City. Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame (1987), the highest number of Top 40 singles of any female performer (forty-five), and the youngest recipient of the John F. Kennedy Center Honors (1994). On August 13, 2018, Franklin was reported to be gravely ill at her home in Detroit. She was reported to be under hospice care and surrounded by friends and family. #wcw #herstory
