My dad in like the early 90s, pointing at the television screen when I told him I want to be an actress one day, “Look at that screen, nobody on there looks like you or me. How can you be an actress?! It’s not for people like us. No.” My dreams have been put on hold so many times - the struggle has been real.

Imagine a world where you’ve never seen a movie at the theatres starring someone who looks like you. This reality sums up the significance of Crazy Rich Asians, because for people like me, it’s not just another movie, it’s a watershed moment. Together, we can all have an impact on whether or not Crazy Rich Asians becomes a hit by Hollywood standards. Its success can actually affect how we see ourselves portrayed onscreen in the future. The stakes are high because this movie is connected to the hopes and dreams of an identity that has long been marginalized. There are so many more stories to tell! As the film’s director Jon M. Chu said, ‘this is a movement’. I am so inspired by all the incredible artists in CRA for taking that brave leap in speaking out about a very important message – Representation matters.
Everyone please go see @crazyrichasians. It is history in the making - the first major studio film in 25 years centering Asian American leads, and an all Asian cast!
2018 dad is now my number one supporter and will always have a full on list of reasons why anything is possible when I doubt myself. If my super traditional Asian dad can change, Hollywood can too.
