Sometimes you have to take a step back, before you can step forward. Easier said than done, especially for an independent, duck-tape-fixes-everything kind of guy like my dad. He’ll feel a little better, push himself too hard and have to start all over again. Recovery is a challenging and humbling process.

Today I’m feeling really grateful for his good days, and for quiet dinners together at the picnic tables in the courtyard of his care facility.
