Hi, I’m Michaela (@lifeofaladybear), the Social Media Manager at Teen Vogue, a.k.a. the person behind every single post you’ve seen on our Instagram for the past two years! My path to landing my dream job here has been anything but straightforward: it involves a career shift and a big move across the Atlantic Ocean from Ireland to NYC. ☘️ When I was 17, I really wanted to study medicine and become a doctor, so when I went to college, I studied Biomedical Science. Over the course of my undergrad I took classes in Pharmacology and Anatomy but my favorite class was Neurophysiology which ended up being one of my majors. By the time graduation came around, I found myself at a crossroads—I was uncertain about what career path I wanted to pursue. I no longer wanted to study medicine and instead found myself developing an interest in digital marketing and social media, which was obviously completely different to what I had studied. I decided to start a blog as a little side project to teach myself about SEO, social media and photoshop. I never started my blog to become a “blogger” as such, moreso to use it as a tool to develop new skills that might help me transition out of science and into a career in business. After a year of blogging, I took the leap and went back to school to study business where I learned about everything from financial management to economics and marketing. Two weeks after graduation, I hopped on a plane and moved to NYC to pursue career opportunities that I knew I wouldn’t have back in Ireland. Thankfully it all worked out! My first job was working at @MTV as a Social Media Producer where I got to work at the @VMAs which was so fun! A year later I moved to @TeenVogue and haven’t looked back since. My advice for people starting their careers would be not to feel afraid of taking risks. I took a huge risk changing careers from science to business and then took another huge risk moving across the world from Ireland to NYC and that’s #HowIGotHere, my dream job at Teen Vogue! ??: @zak_krevitt
