This is the beginning of a month long celebration of the joy, the pain the triumphs and challenges of breastfeeding. Mother Nature is deeply invested in breastfeeding and we are uniquely designed to feed our young. Breast milk provides information not just nutrition.. it’s a complex form of communication that is dependent on the endocrine system, the emotional brain and the physical body. ~ Besides the wonderful lifelong bond and deep rooted connection you establish with your baby, Breastfeeding can burn up to 600 calories a day so you need to eat enough and stay well hydrated to maximize and continue milk production. I’d like to honor the different challenges that makes it difficult and nearly impossible for some women to manage breastfeeding. These are the results of policy gaps and a culture that does not honor women, the sacred birth process, motherhood or women’s bodies. Some of these manifestations include: Having to go back to work quickly after birth, extended separation of mother and baby right after birth, difficulty in latching that results in pain and frustration for both baby and mom; and low milk production. Engorgement and improper latching are two of the most common hurdles to comfortable breastfeeding. Many women give up breastfeeding due to pain, discomfort and no paid maternity leave. Support and community is key. Having healthy models for breastfeeding and advocates can help breastfeeding success. P.S. #normalizebreastfeeding shouldn’t have to be a hashtag, it should be acceptable all over the world. Thanks @doutzen for saying this all so perfectly.
