August 4 will always be a special day for me, for two very memorable reasons: Career homers No. 500 and 600 both came on this date, three years apart. . It's funny how you remember not only the milestone hits, but the path it took to get there. In 2007, I remember driving to the park that morning stuck on 499 for 8 games. I told myself, "just go out and play baseball. If it happens, it happens." A few hours later, in the bottom of the first inning our first two hitters reached base with Kyle Davies on the mound for Kansas City. He threw me a first-pitch, 89mph fastball and I popped it in the air toward left field. When the ball finally landed over the wall I felt happy because it was a big hit for our team, but also relieved and exhausted from the grind and anticipation. . Three years to the day later, it was like deja vu. We had another afternoon game at home, this time in the new Yankee Stadium. I had gone 12 games since hitting No. 599 and was stuck in an 0-for-17 slump. it was starting to get to me. I will never forget being in the tub warming up a few hours before the game — and the Captain sensing I was tensing up. He said, "Hey Al, why don't you just bunt if the third baseman is playing you deep." It gave me a different approach, and it really helped: Think small, not big. . A few hours later, I'm up to bat and he's on base already. Again, it was in the first inning. I attempted to bunt, but the pitch was away so I took it and worked into a 2-0 count. The next pitch from Shawn Marcum was a cutter away at 85mph and I took a nice, easy swing and hit it out to straightaway center field. . Such a cool moment. As I was about to touch home plate, the Captain was waiting there and said, "See, I told you! Bunting is not such a bad idea!" . One date on the calendar, and two moments in time that I'll always cherish. . @yankees @kcroyals @bluejays @mlb
