Kathrine Switzer is an author, television commentator, and marathon runner. After being told that the Boston Marathon was too long for “fragile women to run,” she became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry in 1967. During her run, race official Jock Semple attempted to stop her by grabbing her official bib but was knocked down by her boyfriend. Five years later, in 1972, the rules finally changed and women were officially allowed to run the marathon. In 2011, Kathrine was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and continues to do work improving running opportunities for women in different parts of the world. #inspirationwednesday
