#tuesdaythoughts. I love the #AtlanticOcean. It was the first big body of water I got to know and the first place I went #scubadiving. My history with her begins on family #summervacations when my #Grandparents escaped there to the warm waters off the #Carolina coast to warm bones chilled by the #BlueRidge Mountain winters. Some of the happiest times in my life were spent there building castles with my Mom on the soft sand or scouring the shore for blacked? teeth with my Grandma ( who found buckets of them during those days, right, @ssreisinger ?). I was bathed in zinc oxide and the scent of mosquito lamps at sunset, fed delicious meals cooked on a @Coleman kerosene stove by lamp light (the kind with that funny sock-like wick) slept like the dead on the pop-out shelf of a #Craftsman Camper and then later upgraded to the fold-down couch bed of a Holiday Rambler, was dazzled by spectacular fireworks on the military base in #MyrtleBeach and had I first summer romance at the #arcade at #OceanLakes Campground serenaded by the jukebox playing ‘I’M NOT IN LOVE by #10cc . I learned about trust there. Not just to recover from a big wave on the shore but when my Dad, was a busy and ambitious young reporter working nights with only a weeklong vacation, would carry us in his arms past the breaking surf and I would quietly relax in a rare moment in his arms. Or witnessing my Grandparent’s rejuvenation as we floated alongside their contemporaries in sun caps in caps to protect balding scalps or vinyl bathing caps to protect weekly ‘beauty sets’. Their quiet laughter and sun soaked smiles are as fresh for me now as they were fifty years ago. Those early years taught me to cherish the ocean and drive my desire to protect it . My trip to the #Hamptons this weekend for @wordtheatre, called me to the Atlantic again because it is my home ocean- more feminine than the rowdy #Pacific, more maternal than the mystical #Mediterranean, I needed to feel it again-to be baptized in it’s ancient power. It’s water rejuvenated me like it did my ancestors and I am #grateful. #protectwhatyoulove #atlanticocean @healthebay @oceana @paditv @paditravel #padi
