Mississippi has never been known for its gleaming transportation work, but the situation today is worse than ever. More than 20% of the county and local bridges in the state have been declared unsafe or have structural deficiencies.

Stephanie Park’s 2-mile drive to her mailbox turned into a 17-mile trip because of a closed bridge. When her neighbor died, she waited with his body for 2 hours before the county coroner could make it to his house.

“You can only slap somebody so many times before they leave,” says Billy Redwine, who owns an auto parts store that has seen a decrease in customers because of 3 closed bridges within a mile of his shop.
