Is Kadyn a boy or a girl? That’s a question parents, Nate and Julia Sharpe, say only Kadyn can decide. The couple represent a small group of parents raising “theybies” — children being brought up without gender designation from birth.

The parents do not reveal the sex of their children to anyone. If no one knows a child’s sex, these parents theorize, the child can’t be pigeonholed into gender stereotypes.

Kadyn’s parents want to foster an environment of openness and love. This means learning to see their children simply as “kids” rather than as “boys” or “girls,” and encouraging others to do the same.
