I celebrated my recent defeat of death by commissioning the crazy talented @wonderbros_mike to paint this team photo from the end credits of one of my all-time favorite films, The #badnewsbears. I saw this movie with my family in 1976 - a full year before @スター・ウォーズ would take over my childhood. Having never had much interest in sports, the North Valley League Bears were my kind of team: one with more will than skill. They were the Kids Least Likely to Succeed - the original movie underdogs (who hit the screen months before the release of Rocky) from which all underdog movie teams get their DNA. After coming together as the wretched refuse of Little League, the Bears enjoy an unlikely rise in the ranks to eventually take on their hated rivals, the Yankees. And just when it looks like our heroes will be victorious... *SPOILERS*!!! The Bears don’t win. It is perhaps the most profound sense of loss I’ve ever felt in a movie theater. I was crushed as a kid. But now I realize what a gift that movie was for teaching me how to lose. Life is a loooooong game and it’s not really possible to always win at it. The Bears taught me that it’s not whether you win or lose, but who you win or lose WITH. There’s nothing wrong with not being the best at something - but if you surround yourself with good friends and never face the odds alone? Even when you lose, you win. We play, but not to win - though if winning happens, that rocks. We play because it’s fun! We play because it beats trying to earn a living any other way! We play because play is way better than work! And we play because we didn’t come into this life to sit around on a dugout bench - so we get our asses out there and do the best we can!
