There is an ongoing debate and a lot of mixed feelings going around when it comes to feeding sharks and if it negatively impacts the way they behave. Some people say it changes their biological behavior and can throw off the marine ecosystem, others say it helps to bring awareness to Sharks, which leads to changing the way people think about them. One thing is for sure, it’s all about cool Instagram photos until someone gets bitten, whether it was provoked or unprovoked, then Sharks get the bad end of the stick. Never mind the person who was trying to hand feed them, or tried to grab their fin, or got in the water whiles they were being fed just for a cool photo that they could put on the gram. Sharks are wild animals, whether they are Reef Sharks or Nurse Sharks, they can bite at any given moment and when they are repeatedly fed, they will associate us with food. I swam with these Caribbean Reef Sharks at Danger Reef in The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, which have been fed for decades before there was a strict ban placed on feeding animals in the park. Whenever I got in the water with these creatures I show nothing but respect, and accept that anything that can possibly happen will be all on me, don’t mind the fancy photos you see everywhere on Instagram, it only takes one little accident for a crazy, misinformed headline. @bahamasnationaltrust ?? Let me know in the comments below what your opinion on sharks interaction and feeding is! Would you swim with these lovelies? ✨
