Raqqa was the capital of ISIS. Can it ever be home again? When @ivorprickett took this photo, Eissa Ali’s family was returning home to Raqqa, the former ISIS stronghold in #Syria. The family left last year after Eissa was detained and beaten by jihadists for playing cards. Now that the bombs have stopped falling and ISIS is gone, they’re not sure whether they still have a home. @nytben, a middle east correspondent for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, visited Raqqa with the photographer @ivorprickett to see how people are trying to recover their lives. People remain in shock, trying to make sense of the destruction. Residents they met said they were glad that the jihadists were gone, but there isn’t enough money to rebuild. They wondered whether it was necessary for a United States-led coalition to destroy the city. (More than 3,000 buildings were destroyed and hundreds of civilians were killed after the American-led coalition dropped thousands of bombs on the city to get ISIS out.) All over Raqqa, it was unclear what it would take to recover from the scars of ISIS. The top 2 floors of Eissa Ali’s house were missing. Most of the neighborhood was gone, erased by airstrikes. But the family patched holes in the walls, cleaned out the rubble and moved back in anyway. Visit the link in our profile to see the full dispatch from #Raqqa.
