He sits behind this empty piece of paper,
a calm in the air lured him here,
his pockets full of crayons.
He is watching things around him as
his legs dangle over the small dock of the pond.
The water is still, though through it he can make out certain fish he doesn’t know the names of, and to his right the moss on the shoreline looks as if it’s dying,
but he knows better that it is not.
He smells the cigarette smoke of his parents
on his clothes, and knows that even they are dreaming, creating something alive inside themselves.
He inhales deeply, then starts to draw.
There is a certain pause about this morning that allows
a certain something in him to grow,
as he sits,
with everyone still asleep,
and for the moment
not wondering what will be this afternoon
once the fog burns away,
once the quiet ends,
once the crayons have all run out.
