The recent spate of lions being poached at captive lion facilities is alarming to say the least showing that the concern expressed when the lion bone quota was established last year was warranted. The modus operandi of the killings has been almost always similar with the use of pieces of meat laced with a poison (insecticide) called ‘two step’ or Temik, which seems to be readily available. There’s a growing demand for lion bones in the ‘muti’ trade and the bone trade to the Far East. It’s a brutal death for these animals and it seems no establishment is safe including game reserves containing wild lions. Like the rhino poachings which started rising in 2008 the perpetrators will always start with ‘easy’ targets but will move on as the demand grows which seems to be happening right before our eyes. Hopefully something can and will be done before this spirals out of control. There are between 6500 and 8000 lions sitting in captivity in SA most as a consequence of the cub petting and ‘canned’ hunting industry. It’s sickening to think that now many of these souls may land up becoming part of the ‘muti’/bone industry.
