A nation built on dissent, born out of rebellion and birthed from the notion that all men are created equal, paying taxes to a foreign government is bs and that we, as humans, have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (we’ve later gone on to try and expound on that to include women, homosexuals and people of color, thank God). Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” echos in our spirit in various forms. In protest, in speech, in religious practices, in voting and in every breath we take. We are a young nation that makes mistakes but the world still looks to us because, through all of our errors, we are hopeful and we look to better ourselves through trial and error and we believe in a greater good. It doesn’t always work but we try. We are a nation of refugees, immigrants, idealist and dreamers. We must never give up, we must not “move to Canada” (you turncoats) we must stay and fight just as our forefathers did for what they believed in. We must remember that this country was not given, nay, it was forged from blood, death and on the backs of men and women who believed in a better tomorrow. Today you can go to a bbq and get drunk or do whatever you want but please just remember for a second that those fireworks, “the bombs bursting in air”are symbols of rebellion and that firepower and will is what built the land on which you stand. Love it or hate it, this land is worth fighting for.
