In 2012, the Rolex Deepsea Challenge experimental watch made history. It accompanied film-maker and explorer James Cameron on his solo dive to the deepest part of the ocean, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, some 11 kilometres (6.8 miles) below sea level. During its development, the watch was tested in a special hyperbaric tank at pressures up to 1,500 bars, corresponding to a depth of 15,000 metres (nearly 50,000 feet); this is 25 per cent greater than the depth at which the watch is guaranteed waterproof. Entirely developed and manufactured in-house, the Rolex Deepsea Challenge is an example of exceptional engineering.
