One year ago, a 14 year old trans boy from my hometown and school took his own life. His name was Finn. I didn’t know him on a personal level but interacted with him quite a few times as he worked in the local grocery store I go to. I always remembered he was so joyful and so full of light. I remember thinking how proud I was of him and how excited I was for his future. He was one of those people that exuded light. So when I found out what happened, I was really shocked and shaken. My very first thought was, I wish I would have told him how amazing I thought he was, and that if he ever needed a friend to talk to, I would have been that to him. I immediately contacted the school and said I wanted to help in any way that I could. So we arranged for me to come in and talk to the kids. Before that was all set up, I knew I wanted to write a song dedicated to his memory, but also a song that could help others who might be in need. I wanted to write something that when people listen to it, they feel like they have a song for them, and that they have a friend in me. A song to empower and help get through the hard times. I decided I wanted to film my visit to the school and set this song to it. My hope is that it helps anyone who is feeling hopeless or lost. You are not alone. You are not alone. You are not alone. When you need a friend, I will be your friend. Each and every one of you are beautiful, and beauty goes so much deeper than the mainstream portrays. Beauty is the courage of someone’s soul to be exactly who they are. Beauty is someone that radiates love. Beauty is individuality and uniqueness. As Pride month comes to and end, I want to leave you with my music video, ‘When You Need A Friend’ to help remind you to be prideful every moment of your life. You should all be extremely proud of the beautiful beings that you are. You are all perfect ??
