“I've been going on at length about music diplomacy lately. For me and my work, that complicated phrase is actually quite simple. It signifies my intention to dedicate a portion of my musical activities toward fostering connections between communities and peoples over international borders. Even more simply stated, it means that you might often hear me singing in a different language.. and trying out musical styles that aren't necessarily native to me.I like the concept of traveling through music, and that's an experience that I'd like to create for audiences.
Here is my first stab at it. This is a cover by Venezuelan-American singer-songwriter, Devendra Banhart. The video features two classically trained Venezuelan dancers. My hope is that this, and future work like it, might inspire viewers to take a moment to consider and learn about a country that might not be their own.
