That night I ended up scaling over barbed wire, and running across the freeway
toward a trailer park to use somebody’s phone. The next morning I awoke in
my driveway with dried blood on my mouth and lumps all over my head, and a car next to me with the kid sleeping inside it. I picked myself up, walked over to the car, opened the passenger door, and there he was, still as a painting.
I’ve been in this area since I was a kid. There is no other place that I’d rather be.
I’ll stay here as long as they’ll let me. I didn’t speak all night. I tried to come up with a word, but it never came.
