Mireya & puppies in Puerto Rico with @thesatoproject • “We first saw Mireya on the side of the road, emaciated and obviously feeding newborn puppies. We swerved the car over – my team has gotten used to the shout ‘dog!’ followed by some stunt driving. We offered her water and food, which she took, but we needed to find her puppies – you cannot rescue the mom and leave the newborns behind. A security guard informed us that they called her ‘Mireya’ and that they had built a ‘house’ for her out of a cardboard box, which he took us to. There were four puppies, one of which was not looking so good and we knew needed veterinary care urgently. We scooped the puppies, but Mireya was very shy and although she would eat from my hand, I could not get a leash on her that evening. We were determined, and by 9:30am the next morning we had her in a crate! Nothing like a hungry mum and some hot dogs to ensure a successful rescue mission.” • “Mireya is heartworm, ehrlichia, and anaplasmosis positive. Her skin is not great and she needs to gain a lot of weight. She is slowly coming out of her shell – she enjoys a gentle touch and knows her name – her tail wags when she hears it! Her puppies will take their freedom flight on June 23rd and we all hope that Mireya will respond well to treatment and be able to fly in late July.” To help support The Sato Project’s mission with a donation, please visit the GoFundMe link in bio.
