As you all know I'm not big into celebrating holidays whose genesis are birthed in the marketing bowels of hallmark, so i'm posting this on an arbitrary Tuesday. This dude, Papa, Ols, Dad, my mentor and one of my best friends. This picture was taken at his retirement party. Ols just crushing that yellow on yellow tie and shirt combo like a champ. 52 years of changing lives. For those of us not great at math that's over half a century (Add the two, carry the zero) Even with all that time, his legendary success, and staggering accomplishments he's never lost an ounce of gratitude, passion, or empathy for the human experience. I'm perpetually amazed at his capacity to love and inspire everybody he spends time with. So i guess this is a public love letter. A declaration of admiration - To a white dude from Minnesota that dedicated his life to teaching Holocaust remembrance and African American Literature in the 70's because those stories HAD to be told. To a guy that wouldn't take a job in Divison 1 because they wouldn't let him teach AND be the track and cross country coach. He HAD to do both. To a guy that took a sabbatical to learn poetry in our basement and then did a one man show all over the country to get kids excited about poetry again. To the last of the renaissance men. To a guy that taught me how to throw a perfect spiral. To a guy that taught me to lead with love, inclusion, and positive reinforcement. To a guy that always makes choices based on hope instead of fear. To a guy that makes you feel like your possibilities are endless. To a guy that brings forth the best version of ourselves, the part of ourselves that knows how to love and be loved. On this arbitrary Tuesday, and every other day of the year....I love u Dad.
