I'd like to tell you a little bit about my dad. He grew up as one of six kids in a poor, single parent household in Hong Kong. My ah-ma (grandma) worked 3 jobs to support them. At one point, after their block of flats burnt down, they were homeless. My dad, after leaving school, worked for 8 years on oil tankers at sea, away from home for months at a time and sending money back to pay for his siblings' education. Eventually, after they all finished school, he saved enough to pay for his own degree, coming to the UK to study engineering. Growing up, my dad was the most selfless, patient and kind father but when I was younger there were a few things I found hard to understand or was bemused by - his obsession with education, his adversion to waste of any kind, his insistence that we finish every bit of food on our plates, him constantly reminding us not to take anything for granted. It was because he knew what it was like to have nothing. I will be forever grateful for the sacrifices he made for our family, for teaching me the value of hard work and to never look down on others who have less. I know I literally wouldn't be able to live the life that I live without him. I love you dad. Thank you for everything. ❤️ #happyfathersday *One more thing* ... It's impossible to celebrate Father's Day without thinking about the children currently separated from their parents at the border. Immigrants/migrants are so often demonised in the media, painted as scroungers trying to come and take what's yours. As a daughter of immigrants and in my experience, they are often some of the most hard-working people who just want the chance of a better life for their families and to contribute to society. They're often fleeing poverty or danger that we can barely imagine. A child arriving with their family at the border may have next to nothing in terms of money or possessions. The love and protection of a parent may be all they have. To forcibly separate them is shameful. #ReuniteTheFamilies
