Happy Father’s Day! Our legendary street photographer Bill Cunningham took this photo in 1982. It’s one of a series of pictures of dads and their kids that @ニューヨーク・タイムズ published on Sunday, June 20, that year. “Children are at once a joy and a burden, and there is a certain kind of father who bears the burden with an easy grace,” read the accompanying article, written by Georgia Dullea. “The child riding high on his shoulders, the child sprawled sleepy-eyed on his back, the child giggling on his knee seems less an encumbrance than an extension of his body. Man and child are bonded on this Father's Day as never before.” That bonding, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported, begins at birth. “Once shunted off in the hospital waiting room, where he was expected to pace the floor and drink too much coffee or smoke too many cigarettes, the father has become an attendant in the delivery room and birthing room.
