For my dear father in law by @amandaemery26 ”Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s nearly 4 years ago.
It was just six months after he had eventually retired (something he never really intended to do as I think he thought that if he just kept living day to day he could put off getting old!). During that last few months however we had started to notice that this confident, cheerful, happy go lucky man was starting to get unnecessarily anxious about seemingly minor things and had started to have a problem finding odd words here and there in conversation. He has always had a terrible memory though, so to a certain extent it wasn’t that noticeable(!). Initially I think we all had different thoughts about it, but after another couple of months we started to get concerned and push for him to see a doctor.
When the diagnosis case it was a bit of a shock. In some ways it was a relief to know what we were dealing with and to think that we could start to get some help. At the same time this was our first real introduction to the reality of living with dementia and all that comes with it for everyone affected - and that brings us to the Alzheimer’s Society.
At present there is no cure, but there is care. If you care, please help us find a cure.
