"About 1” of new growth (natural level 3). Natural hair lifts easier than color treated (especially permanent) hair. So when that lovely band of permanent color grows out, and you go to lighten it what will that cause? BANDING. This is also why I will not do ombrés, balayages, etc from an almost black base to silver blonde ends. (Unless their natural hair is dark & not color treated) because I will not be able to bust through color treated hair that dark, the same as I can natural hair. This client had a few golden areas left in her midshaft (which were mostly toned) but we broke through that band pretty well. When doing colors, before slapping on what the client wants, or doing what’s easy...think about the long run. Be meticulous. Take steps to help with color longevity, how the color will fade and precautions to avoid future problems."
