SAVE THE DATE JUNE 4TH AT 6 PM at Leica Galerie, in via Mengoni 4, Milano✨"When Ethics meets Aesthetics"✨ #PhotoVogue exhibition ✨This year for Vogue Italia’s initiative in collaboration with @leica_camera_italia we chose to explore PhotoVogue’s projects capable of showing that there’s a shared ground between ethics and aesthetics in photography.✨
If every representation is a form of aestheticization, this is especially true for photography as pointed out by Susan Sontag in her most prominent collection of essays “On Photography”. Photography interprets and alters reality according to the photographer’s subjective gaze resulting in a vicarious view of what is being portrayed, even when this is an uncomfortable, disturbing or perverse subject. To many intellectuals, the aestheticization of photography led to the creation of images capable of anesthetize the spectators’ feelings making them more passive in front of what is being revealed to their eyes. According to writer and critic David Levis-Strauss “the idea that the more transformed or ‘aestheticized’ an image is, the less ‘authentic’ or politically valuable it becomes, is one that needs to be seriously questioned. In “Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography and Politics”, the author asks the question: “Why can’t beauty be a call to action?” A perfectly legitimate question if one considers the essential contribution made by the works of contemporary artists to the shaping and development of critical judgment, awareness and aggregation.✨
Between February and April 2018 we selected 5 photographers each month among the 155,000 + members of PhotoVogue, and a total of 15 artists. Among them we have singled out the most authentic: @daviduzochukwu, @federicasassophoto, @janklos_photo, @bevillard_photography, @maximushka,@rosa_polin,@samalexandergregg, @sharmaarkealiadan, @snezhana_von_buedingen and @sophiekietzmann. Their photographic projects will be featured in the exhibition, curated by @alessiaglaviano and @maranif, that will run through Tuesday June 26, 2018✨Free Entrance✨See you at the opening! #milanophotoweek
