What does Lesley Gore, “A Chorus Line”, “The Way We Were”, & so many other landmarks in music history have in common? My precious eternal brother Marvin Hamlisch...My daughter Jolie was attending PCS, the same school as a 15-year-old kid named Marvin Hamlisch (he graduated the same year that she went in) who also happened to be the nephew of my dentist. My dentist called me up one day & asked if I would listen to his nephew’s song called "Sunshine, Lollipops, & Rainbows". I was the VP of A&R at Mercury Records at the time & had just finished “It’s My Party” with Lesley Gore & I knew that Marvin’s “Sunshine, Lollipops, & Rainbows" would be the absolute best next fit for her. We did it & I have never looked back. Marvin went on to become one of the most musical minds & even more importantly than that, he was a beautiful soul. He was one of a very short list of PEGOTs (Pulitzer, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar [3 Oscars in 1 yr!], & Tony recipients) & we bonded over our love of music, food, & friendship. His wife Terre has been an absolute hero in preserving his legacy, especially through the release of a new compilation called “Play It Again, Marvin!”, which we had the pleasure of celebrating, just last week. Marvin, we will not (& cannot) forget your contributions to music & life & there’s no doubt that we miss you more every day! Happy birthday!
