“Surfing in Nigeria is a genuine sport now,” says Godpower Pekipuma (@gpsurfing), owner of a surf school here in Tarkwa Bay, Lagos. “We have about 50 people surfing regularly.”

As much as surfing is top of mind for Godpower and his friends, this summer’s global football tournament takes priority for every Nigerian. “Everyone stops what they’re doing to watch the game. Everyone plays football here – even my dad still plays!”

These days, Godpower’s biggest challenge is taking young Nigerians’ passion from the pitch to the lineup.

“Many are afraid of the water goddess we call ‘Mami,’” Pekipuma says. “My job is to empower the youth to paddle out, enjoy nature and understand that the ocean is something to respect and enjoy.”
