A bit of indulgent real talk just to dispel the appearance of cute pool floaties and lush landscapes...
@steve_salter and I have returned from our week in Crete more tired and cranky than when we left thanks to a compounding combo of Nico developing an ear infection, the never ending saga of severe teething and because *news flash* she’s a 16 month old wanting to break/tear/open/grab everything she sees in sight and her favourite word is “NO!” right now
Sympathetic strangers looking at me struggling with Nico whilst she pulls my hair and scratches my neck, love to impart their own theories as to when it gets “better” or when some magical unicorn of a turning point happens. 2 years old? 3? 6? Never?
Clutching onto the “It’s just a phase!” line of thought can seem a bit futile when one bad phase segues into another even worse phase
I say all of this with the obvious clause that we are Hashtag Blessed and it goes without saying that we love her unconditionally
More times than not though this week, that love was tested and that unconditionality of parental love excludes me screaming silently in the shower, wishing for two nano seconds for my pre-parenthood life when we could drive and hike to craggy secret swimming coves
Of course those two nano seconds come and go, and then Nico opens up the shower doors, grabs my thigh and starts sucking her thumb and then I self-flagellate for the silent screaming. Repeat ad nauseam
Anyway mom monologue over. Get me a stiff drink if any of you real peeps see me next, yeah?
