Opening tomorrow @fondazioneprada Venice is the very thought-provoking Machines à Penser, curated by Dieter Roelstraete it explores the ‘correlation between conditions of exile, escape and retreat and physical or mental places which favour reflection, thought and intellectual production’. All of this is channelled through the lives and sanctuaries, or places where the thinking took place for three major 20th-century philosophers Theodor Adorno, Martin Heidegger & Ludwig Wittgenstein. The ground floor of the 18th-century palazzo is devoted to Theodor Adorno while the more engaging first floor features reconstructions and models of Wittgenstein’s house in Skjolden, Norway and Heidegger’s Black Forest Cabin. Artwork supporting the exhibition includes small dioramas by Mark Riley and three sculptures of the philosophers’ heads by Goshka Macuga. Other supporting artworks drawing parallels include some fine Renaissance prints and paintings depicting the scholarly Saint Jerome translating the Bible into Latin and an incredible Renaissance studiolo featuring some impressive marquetry. Prada does philosophy, art and architect in a Venetian palazzo... where else?
