Today we laid to rest my grandmother, Virginia Cooper. She was born in 1916, when Wilson was president and before the US had even entered WWI. She rode a horse to elementary school. She loved FDR because of the Rural Electrification Act and late in her life she still read transcripts of his fireside chats. She was a teacher in the Atlanta public school system for decades, and raised two teenagers alone after my grandfather died young of a heart attack. She fought to help my mother get into Georgia Tech as a physics major when that was almost unheard of for women in the early 60’s. She was a lady, a little red hen, a Democrat, and a Methodist. She was generous beyond belief and never judged anyone. She is my daughter’s namesake. I don’t think I ever understood her properly, as I wasn’t very interested in being ladylike or going to church or wearing 8 layers of cashmere (boy does that sound nice now). But she kept up with the times and even made me take her to see Tina Turner in her 80’s when her health was still good. She was 102, and had been ill for a very very long time, which also taught me and my family a great lesson on what living truly is and truly means. She has not been a real presence in my life for years now, but tonight I finally miss her and wish I could go back and tell her I understand her more than ever. Thank you Goga, for making me cream of wheat, jumping up and down if I finished it, and making sure my sister and I had equal turns sharing the H glass. Which was just a glass with a blue ‘h’ on it but clearly superior to all other glasses. May the gentle God you believed in deliver you to your peace.
