This morning we watched the latest episode of #unitedshadesofamerica called ‘The Disability Community’. I have much more to learn and more listening to do; but this episode was a powerful reminder of some of the biggest issues people face in life, work, housing and healthcare when they live with a disability. I’ve spent too long not understanding and better supporting the lives, stories, and needs of people living with disabilities* (*that phrasing is a topic discussed, with different opinions, in the episode) and was so grateful to hear a wide range of voices in the episode. I especially enjoyed the segment on Universal Design, which I had sadly never heard of. Please check out this episode if you can - it’s on CNN and you can watch excerpts online. Like any community, these stories and voices are not a monolith and they encompass a range experiences and opinions, but this was a great place to learn and listen.
