A lot of people asked me about my outfit today. The patent red pocket caught everyone’s eye. The jeans. So many questions I got to answer. And there began an important series of conversations. • “This is a capsule collection for @levis designed by @karlawelchstylist. She’s a powerhouse/momma/#reSISTER. And every single penny goes to @everytown.” Everyone said some version of “oh it’s awful, what keeps happening.” “Why can’t we get it together?” And thus we got to the heart of it. • With the last horrific and senseless loss of life in Texas, it is officially more dangerous to go to school in the USA than to serve on active duty in our military. No explanation — of anything — no excuse of any kind will make that FACT okay. It should be an unbearable pill to swallow. For all of us. It’s not video games or movies causing this. It’s access to weapons. And like so many countries before us, we have a responsibility to act. • I say these things as a gun owner. I was on the range with my buddies doing target practice with AR-15s three days before Parkland happened, y’all. Three days. I love shooting that gun. And I’m perfectly happy to only be able to do so in an enclosed and protected range. I’m happy to have more stringent laws placed upon my hobby. Because it’s a HOBBY. Your children are worth so much more than an activity to me. Than ANYTHING. I’m a gun owner. And I am begging my government to do something about this epidemic. • Now. Arguments. “A well regulated militia,” eh? Well how about we regulate guns as well as we regulate cars? Each of us who drives abides by those laws. No “infringement.” What about protection? Women? Well women are 5x more likely to die in a domestic situation if a gun is in the house than not. Fact. Friendly fire — accidental firearm discharge in the home — accounts for 1,300 child deaths (and an additional 6,000 injuries) per year. Fact. We make up 5% of the world’s population but have 42% of world’s privately owned firearms. More guns = more deaths. FACT. • There is no reason we cannot put sensible gun laws in place to protect BOTH responsible owners and our kids. That’s why I wear a red pocket. A conversation starter. Thank you @xkarla
