LIFE legend Jimmy Stewart was born 110 years ago in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He is pictured here in an image that was featured on the cover of the Sept. 24, 1945 issue of LIFE magazine. According to LIFE: "Movie actor Jimmy Stewart, a colonel and commanding officer of the 2nd Bomb Wing of the Eighth Air Force, recently posed for LIFE on top of the Savings & Trust Co. bank in Indiana, Pa. his old hometown. In background is the courthouse-city hall, crowned by a V-sign placed there in 1942 by Jimmy's father and more recent sign simply saying, "Welcome Jim." Jimmy was glad to be home. He had been overseas 23 months." The photo essay featured images of his home-coming by one of the original 4 LIFE photographers, Peter Stackpole.
