Yesterday The Queen presented Paul Muldoon, one of Ireland's leading contemporary poets, with the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry, at Buckingham Palace.
The Gold Medal for Poetry was instituted by King George V in 1933. It is awarded for a book of verse published by someone in any of the Commonwealth realms.
Past winners have included W H Auden, John Betjeman and Gillian Allnutt.
The Poet Laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy was also present during Muldoon's audience with The Queen. Dame Carol described Muldoon as "ambitious, erudite, witty and musical" when he was announced as the recipient of the award in December 2017.
