As Ryan Coogler took the stage to introduce a screening of #BlackPanther at the Cannes Film Festival, a group of French children began shouting "L'auteur! L'auteur!" Nearly a decade after his first Cannes outing (and first trip out of the country), Coogler is now the director of a movie that has made $1.3 billion worldwide, earned near-universal praise from critics, and obliterated a pernicious Hollywood myth—that international audiences won’t show up for movies with predominantly black casts.
