I recently visited this awesome "climbing kiln" in Aizu Misato Town, owned by the Munakata family. Their family has been firing pottery in this historic kiln since 1718(!). they still hold sacred pottery firings in the climbing kiln, during which they fire hundreds of pieces in one go, once every 2 years. It takes 3 days - 3 long days when the workers dare not leave the side of the kiln to make sure the fire doesn't go out. I'd love the chance to visit this kiln during this period in the future.
