London is home to some beautifully grand doorways. Why not take some time to look at some of London’s finest portals in Belgravia, Mayfair and other wealthy parts of London. As you observe the entrances to some of the older properties, you may notice half moon shaped windows above the door adorned with beautiful petal and web motifs. These are fanlights and have been around since the end of the 17th century. They were used to differentiate properties before house numbers were introduced. The unique pattern was a way of determining your house from that of your neighbours! It was perfect for dinner parties; you would send out an invitation with your street address and which side of the street you were on (south, north, east, west) and then you would draw the fanlight pattern. The invitation was given to the cab or carriage driver who would match the pattern to the light and drop the guest off at the correct address! A delightful little hidden gem. #HiddenLondon
