Entire families lived there. Children took their first steps in this dark world, engulfed by an unbearable and persistent stench. As soon as they were big enough to carry weight, they started waiting for the procession of garbage trucks to return from the city, loaded with what some saw as urban waste, but which was a means of existence for others. When the trucks got ready to dump their trash, the children, each equipped with large bags, rushed to salvage anything they could sell or recycle and thereby earn their daily bread. Skin diseases and eye infections are some of the primary ills the landfill site's children suffer. What a strange vision of the world! A mountain of waste brought from a distant city, from a life that is not their own and probably never will be. Landfills in the world are the result of the waste of our consumer society. They are proportional to what we consume.
