Activity continues as a fissure eruption fountains more than 100 feet into the air near Pahoa, Hawaii, on May 6. Geologists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory have not been able to forecast an end to the eruption. A local state of emergency has been declared after Mount Kilauea erupted near residential areas, forcing the mandatory evacuation of about 1,700 people from their homes. Several earthquakes have been recorded in the area where the eruptions continue, including a 6.9 magnitude quake that struck the area on May 4.
