LIFTOFF! On a foggy early Saturday, our InSight lander launched on a six-month journey to Mars!
InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, was sent to space onboard a United Launch Alliance (@ULALaunch) Atlas-V rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. It is a Mars lander designed to touch down on the Martian surface, where it will spend its time getting to know the heart of the Red Planet. Using its unique tools, the spacecraft will conduct Mars’ first thorough checkup since it formed 4.5 billion years ago. As the first outer space robotic explorer to study in-depth the “inner space” of Mars, the mission will help us understand how rocky planets, including Earth, formed.
